GRAVEL DRIVEWAY REPAIR
& DRAINAGE IN CAPE BRETON

A gravel driveway is both a driving surface and a drainage surface.

Shoreline Dirtworks repairs recurring washouts, erosion, failed ditches, drainage problems, soft areas and driveways that will not hold their shape. Where the existing material is suitable, we recondition and recover it rather than automatically covering the problem with another load of gravel.

The driveway is reshaped to control water, corrected with drainage work or broad driveable grade reversals where required, and mechanically compacted to create a stable finished surface. The objective is a practical repair that uses what is sound, corrects what is failing and reduces repeated maintenance after every storm.

More than surface grading

FIX THE REASON IT KEEPS FAILING.

Ruts, potholes, soft areas, washouts and standing water are symptoms. A lasting repair starts by understanding where the water comes from and how the erosion is caused. We assess whether the base is adequate, how the driveway is crowned or sloped and where runoff can safely go.

We assess your property as one system. Sometimes the answer is a focused refresh. Sometimes the driveway needs drainage correction, new material or reconstruction. The objective is to complete the work that the property actually requires—not repeatedly hide the same problem.

Common problems

READ THE WATER. UNDERSTAND THE BASE.

The visible damage usually points to a larger issue in drainage, material, shaping or compaction.

POTHOLES & RUTTING

Repeated surface failure caused by trapped water, weak material, failed shaping, traffic patterns or inadequate materials or compaction.

WASHOUTS & EROSION

Runoff travelling along or across the driveway without a controlled route or protected outlet.

SOFT OR SEEPING AREAS

Saturated or insufficient base that cannot reliably carry vehicles, deliveries or construction traffic. Issues with the base must be remediated first.

STANDING WATER

Low areas, blocked drainage or surrounding grades that direct water toward the used and developed areas must be properly corrected not covered up.

Gravel driveway repair and drainage work in Cape Breton

Your Driveway

SHAPE, DRAIN, BUILD, COMPACT.

Driveway performance depends on more than the tread. It depends on the work below and around the finished surface. We specialize in:

  • New rural and private-road access
  • Driveway remediation and reshaping
  • Crowning, grading and aggregate placement
  • Ditches, swales and drainage corrections
  • Culvert installation and replacement
  • Soft-area excavation and base repair
  • Parking, turnaround and construction-access areas
  • Final compaction and clean site transitions

Choose the work the driveway needs

REFRESH, REPAIR OR REBUILD.

Not every driveway requires reconstruction—but not every failing driveway can be solved with another thin layer of gravel.

REFRESH

Recover and recondition suitable existing aggregate, restore crown or crossfall, introduce broad driveable grade reversals where needed, improve drainage, add material selectively and compact the finished surface deliberately.

TARGETED REPAIR

Correct drainage, replace a culvert, excavate a soft area or rebuild a failed section while retaining what is performing properly.

RECONSTRUCTION

Re-establish alignment, drainage, base and surface where the existing access is fundamentally inadequate for its use.

Water decides what lasts

DRAINAGE IS PART OF THE DRIVEWAY.

A good access route moves water away from the driving surface without simply transferring the problem to a building, neighbour, shoreline or unstable slope.

We consider the surrounding catchment, roadside flow, outlet conditions and future site development before selecting the practical correction. Culverts, ditches and swales are located and shaped as part of the complete access—not added after the surface begins to fail.

Where appropriate, broad, driveable grade reversals can interrupt runoff travelling along the driveway and direct it toward a safe outlet without creating an abrupt speed bump.

How the work proceeds

ASSESS. CORRECT. BUILD. COMPACT.

01   ASSESS

Review use, grades, drainage paths, failure areas and access constraints.

02   CORRECT

Address water, weak base, culverts and shaping before finishing the surface.

03   BUILD

Recover sound aggregate where practical, add suitable material selectively, then establish the crown, crossfall and grade changes the access requires.

04   COMPACT

Use specialized compaction equipment to seat the aggregate into a firm, stable surface, finish transitions and leave drainage routes working cleanly.

A more resource-conscious approach

USE WHAT IS SOUND. CORRECT WHAT IS FAILING.

A sustainable driveway does not mean making environmental claims that cannot be measured. It means extending the useful life of the driveway by controlling water, recovering suitable aggregate, adding new material only where it is needed and avoiding repeated cosmetic repairs that fail during the next heavy rain.

A good fit

ACCESS WITH A REAL JOB TO DO.

We are best suited to rural, coastal and difficult-access properties where grades, drainage, future construction or recurring failure require more thought than a quick grading pass.

REQUEST A DRIVEWAY REVIEW.

Tell me what the driveway has been doing, where the property is and approximately how long the access is. I’ll review the information and determine whether a focused correction is realistic before winter.
